I snapped a series of photographs of this ship at the Yorktown Riverwalk in Virginia right after a wonderful shoot with my first ArtInspired Babies (TM) Member. The light was great that day and the sun was just about to set. I really like the contrast of the boat whose movements are propelled by the wind and the bridge, whose structure is created to withstand it. The moving boat and still bridge, yet both things are necessary to get you somewhere from land to land. Perhaps a poem later... perhaps.

Hola Butterfly

I know that perhaps this photo may not constitute anything as earth shattering or terribly brilliant as far as photography goes, but there is something mesmerizing about a butterfly when it lands close to you. Perhaps it's their unpredictable moods and the way they tease you with their flirty flight patterns, where you hope they grace you with a soft landing on your arm. They rarely do, but once when you have one perched upon you, then you experience that half-panic breathlessness because you don't want the beautiful creature to fly away so fast. Your eyes get huge trying to soak in all that you are gazing at.
This particular specimen was larger than my hand when it was fully stretched out. It seemed to pose just so when I put my camera to my face. "Thank you," I giggled to the butterfly.
Perhaps I could add an artistic flair to it. How's about something like this?

It does go well with my newest logo. (You'll see that new swirl design in most of my photography from now on. Do you like it?)
Also, this is great timing on my part I guess ;-) ... the Panel Gallery at Sweet Briar College has announced it's newest photography exhibit and guess what the theme is???
Medford Taylor exhibit opens Sept. 3 in Babcock Gallery

Industrial Sunset
One thing we as humans can't manufacture, is the true beauty of the natural sunset. Each one is different and the colors can be mesmerizing. The other day I saw wisps of clouds hanging down like fringes, reflecting a pink and purple glow over the York River in Yorktown, Virginia (of course no camera in hand). This shot was taken on a cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk and I believe this is either Portsmouth or Chesapeake... I'm not entirely sure. I saw the factory structures and the sunset nearing its conclusion, so I took a quick shot on the slow moving boat and this is what I captured.

Dyptic of Justice and Law
In my attempt to be fresh in seeing something new in old iconic structures, I decided to present the sculptures sitting in front of the Supreme Court Building in Washington D.C. as a dyptic. On the left is the statue "Authority of Law" and on the right "Contemplation of Justice". I like the simplicity of seeing just the statues themselves without the clutter of the building's facade and portico. The statement is great with their united balance. I hope we keep these things in mind as we work on the issues that warrant the function of our Supreme Court in this nation.

This World Confused
This shot is surreal and some people who have seen it look it over twice and ask me if this is Photoshopped. Not at all, it is just a reflection I saw while standing on a bridge in Newport News, Virginia at the Noland Trail. There are numerous bridges along the path, just perfect for contemplation. It's a great trail to walk, jog or just hang out at.I did a series of photos one afternoon which I then self-published into a little book, along with an original poem. It is entitled, "The Way of the Fall". Each print corresponds with a line in the poem and this one is "of this world confused".

One Destiny

Have you ever lived somewhere for awhile and then discover beautiful history right under your nose? Well, my discovery of the Victory Monument in Yorktown, Virginia was just like that, except for it was right above my nose. Overlooking a beautiful view of the York River, stands a very tall monument adorned with statues and wonderful quotes. It commemorates the concluding battle won of the Revolutionary War in 1781. The monument itself was completed in 1884 and sits on the southeast end of Main Street. I had no clue it was there until I got lost going to the wherever it was one afternoon. Now it's a fun place to gander at and meditate. There is a large tree that you can climb and sit on the giant branch. I usually need some assistance to get up there but once I'm perched, it's a great spot to watch the boats and birds.
The photo itself frames the words: ONE DESTINY. I think it keeps me mindful that no matter where we come from, who we are, there are still things that we innately share and that is the journey towards whatever future is coming our way.

Camera Obscura
Here is a great little spot for photo enthusiasts to study how the camera came to be and how light plays its part in projecting images, whether it is in a camera, onto a screen or the back of our own eyeballs, it is really a neat thing to try to understand. This Camera Obscura is located in San Francisco, California overlooking the water and right beside the Cliff House. I saw this man biking slowly towards the structure and thought it would be a nice element to the shot. It reminds me of the old photos I see of Boardwalks in the early 1900's. I gave this picture a little bit of an overexposure and saturated the yellows and blues in my post processing. The result is like a daydream... one that I wouldn't mind seeing again.
